Smotherman Kent LS on Q-Link 000000000 I've always wanted to do a diary program since English Composition I class at Kansas State University, when we were required to keep a daily journal of whatever we wanted to write. I just never seemed to get around to it until now, and geoDiary is the result. geoDiary is a completely self-contained mini-word processor organized like a personal diary. It has it's own file format which is encrypted and password protected so no one other than the writer can see what's inside. It also has a standard ASCII sequential file output feature so you can transfer your journals to other word processors or programs for printing or whatever you like. Though it's editing functions are very limited, it does feature input word-wrap so you don't have to worry about where to break up your lines. There's also a search function, and several options for scrolling through the diary. Lastly, it supports multiple drives without trashing the state of your system configuration. Two of geoDiary's more unusual features are it's cursive font and it's auto-exec structure. The cursive font is what really gives you the look and feel of keeping a handwritten, personal journal, and the auto-exec structure helps entice keeping daily entries. It's everything you'd want in a diary but in automated computer form. 000000000 @Using geoDiary 000000000 geoDiary stores your journal in a series of GEOS sequential files, one for each month. The name of each file is 'diary.xxxyy', where xxx is the three letter abbreviation for the month and yy is the last two digits of the year. geoDiary will create these files automatically as needed so you never have to worry about managing them yourself. Note that each of these files is encrypted and contains a self-encrypted password, so you won't be able to view any of their data without geoDiary! When geoDiary boots you will see it's file selection screen, which is sort of like a full-screen DBGETFILES dialog box. At the top you'll see the icons available and on the rest of the screen the currently available diary files on the current drive. The icons and their function are: 000000000READ: This will read in the currently highlighted diary file. DISK: This icon is used to change disks in the current drive. Just put in the new disk and then click on DISK to read the directory. DRIVE: This icon is used to change the current drive to the next assigned device number. All four disk device numbers are used, from 8-11 so any configured drive may be used for diary files. QUIT: Click on this icon to return to GEOS. geoDiary will automatically switch back to the device it was loaded from, and if you have used DISK to change disks geoDiary will prompt you to reinsert the disk that geoDiary was loaded from. This feature allows you to put geoDiary on your boot disk and continue there after using geoDiary. ÂKw0000000000000 TODAY: This icon will automatically select the diary file for the current month, or create it if it does not exist on the current disk and device. Make sure you have made the selections with DISK and DEVICE you want before clicking on TODAY! @Click on this icon to scroll down in the list of files. You may hold down the mouse button to continue the scroll. AClick on this icon to scroll up in the list of files. You may hold down the mouse button to continue the scroll. BThis icon moves to the next page of files. You may hold down the mouse button to contine the paging down. CUse this icon to move to the previous page of files. As usual, you may hold down the mouse button to continue the paging. After clicking on either READ or TODAY the appropriate diary file is read/created. You will then be prompted for the password for that diary file. If you are accessing an existing diary, you MUST enter the correct password to continue! If you can't, you will be FORCED to reboot! Sorry, but those are the breaks! If you make a mistake, don't panic -- you have as many attempts at entering the password as you want to make, geoDiary will never give up on you! If you clicked on TODAY and you are creating a new diary file, remember the password you enter, it's the only way to reaccess this diary file! After the file is created you will be reprompted for the password so you'll know right away if you have it right. If you are READing a diary you will be position at the very first entry. If you clicked on TODAY you will see the time and date automatically entered into your journal and you're ready to type in an entry. If you are READing a diary, you may still enter new entries but the current time/date won't be entered for you, geoDiary just assumes you're browsing through an old diary and may want to make some additional comments. In either case it's important to note that you may only APPEND entries to the end of the diary. geoDiary is not, after all, a full-fledged monster word processor, but instead a simple 'pen-and-ink' diary. It's also important to note that the DELete key only functions to erase characters on the current line being input, you can't go back further than the current line so be careful! geoDiary DOES do some nice things for you, however, like automatic word-wrap. But remember that once you've wrapped to the next line, the "ink is dry" on the previous line and cannot be changed! When you've filled up the screen geoDiary will also automatically scroll everything up for you, redisplaying the last line input so you won't forget where you were! ˘?0000000000 You'll also notice your icons have changed once you are into the diary. These are your new optio0000000000 You'll also notice your icons have changed once you are into the diary. These are your new options: FIND: Use this to enter a search string (case sensitive). The search will begin at the very start of the current diary file. AGAIN: Use this to continue with the search for the next occurance. CLOSE: This icon will delete the current diary file and rewrite the new one with the same name. You will then be returned to the file selection screen. ASCII: Click here to write the current diary file to standard Commodore format sequential file in standard ASCII. The filename will be the same as the current diary filename except in Commodore PETASCII so you'll still have your geoDiary GEOS format diary file as well. You will then be returned to the file selection screen. Note that any additions you've made to the diary file will ONLY be saved in the ASCII file, the geoDiary file is NOT updated! Generally you'll only use the ASCII option after READing an existing diary file in, but not make any changes to the file, so doing it this way will save time. You'll also see the same scroll up/down and page up/down icons, along with two new choices for scrolling: DUse the DAY scroll down icon to move from the current journal entry to the next one. This might actually be the next entry on the same day, it just moves you to the next entry. EThis icon moves up to the previous journal entry. 000000000 @That's All, Folks! 000000000 That's all there is to using geoDiary! But if you ever encounter a disk error you'll see a dialog box telling you the error number and which drive it occurred on, and after clicking you will be returned to GEOS and the deskTop. One final note: Make sure you have a copy of the desktop you are using on the same disk as the geoDiary program, so that when geoDiary asks you to reinsert it's program disk to QUIT you won't crash your system! It doesn't matter WHICH desktop you use, be it BSWs DESKTOP, or CMDs gateWay, or something else. As long as it's on your geoDiary program disk everything will work just fine! Also be sure to place geoDiary AFTER your auto-exec to set the time/date, otherwise the TODAY function would just be silly! If you feel the urge, or the need, or just plain want to, leave me some mail on Q-Link, I'd love to hear from you. My Q-Link name is 'Kent LS'. I hope you enjoy using geoDiary as much as I do, I feel just like Doogey! ;) Â@˙a–˙˙€€ŸůŸůńń‡á‡áƒÁƒÁ†€€˙˙–˙˙€€ŸůŸůńń‡á‡áƒÁƒÁ†€€˙˙ÂA(b†˙˙€€–ƒÁƒÁ‡á‡áńńŸůŸů€€˙˙ÂBXb˙ €ž8ů‘@ů‘@ńžLáDÁ8€˙ÂCˆb˙ €ž8‘@Á‘@ážLńDů8ů€˙ÂD¸b˙ €ž/ů‘)Oů‘D‡ń‘|ƒá‘DÁžD€€˙ňEčb˙ €ž ‘)AÁ‘Dƒá‘|‡ń‘D†˙˙€€–ƒÁƒÁ‡á‡áńńŸůŸů€€˙˙ÂBXb˙ €ž8ů‘@ů‘@ńžLáDÁ8€˙ÂCˆb˙ €ž8‘@Á‘@ážLńDů8ů€˙ÂD¸b˙ €ž/ů‘)Oů‘D‡ń‘|ƒá‘DÁžD€€˙ňEčb˙ €ž ‘)AÁ‘Dƒá‘|‡ń‘DůžDů€˙n file format which is en˙ €ž8ů‘@ů‘@ńžLáDÁ8€˙ÂCˆb˙ €ž8‘@Á‘@ážLńDů8ů€˙ÂD¸b˙ €ž/ů‘)Oů‘D‡ń‘|ƒá‘DÁžD€€˙ňEčb˙ €ž ‘)AÁ‘Dƒá‘|‡ń‘DůžDů€˙n file format which is encrypted and password protected so no one ˙ €ž8‘@Á‘@ážLńDů8ů€˙ÂD¸b˙ €ž/ů‘)Oů‘D‡ń‘|ƒá‘DÁžD€€˙ňEčb˙ €ž ‘)AÁ‘Dƒá‘|‡ń‘DůžDů€˙n file format which is encrypted and password protected so no one other than the writer can see what's inside.
